Tom began as a masons helper in 1986 and started an apprenticeship in 1989. In 1998, the Weeping Water School Foundation granted full tuition to attend the Carving Studio in Vermont. The intermixing with commercial construction and exposure to local craftsmen created the foundation for Weeping Water Stone Works. In 2004, Tom was hired by the Weeping Water City Council to design and build the “Welcome to Weeping Water Sign” at the towns west entrance. At the 2005 Nebraska State Fair, a small collection of carvings were awarded two 1st Place awards along with “Best of Lot”, “Best of Show”,  the “Lincoln Art Guild Best of Show”, and the “Dick Blick Best of Show.”
Also in 2005, Tom was invited to show at the Omaha Quest Center Home and Garden Show. In 2007, Tom received the All Nebraska Artist Award. In 2008, The International Bricklayers and Craft Workers presented Tom with the Craft Award. Tom has displayed sculptural works at Hot Shops in Omaha, Nebraska, Louisville Art Gallery, Louisville, Nebraska, and the Stuhr Museum in Grand Island, Nebraska. Many of the works have been sold privately.
